[Photo Essay] The Mallorquian Mediterranean
Last Christmas, I went to Mallorca to explore the island and its pristine beauty, especially when its primary residents were not there. The trip was planned with my good friend, Sundar, who did most of the planning. Our plan was to explore villages like Sóller, Port de Sóller, Valldemossa, Fornalutx and a few nights in Palma.
My side quest was to find something warm for my upcoming trip to Poland.
The people of Mallorca are very sweet and helped up with great recommendations and busted myths of folklore. The following pictures were clicked on the trip using a Fujifilm X-E1 and a Soviet restored Helios 44M lens.
Mallorca has a major floating population. It is a popular spot for the Germans, the Brits, and other northern people who look to get a bit of sun. Due to the way European economy works, many houses in Mallorca are owned by people of these countries.
Tourism shapes Mallorca and the market adapts to the demands of its new residents.
The old city is quite beautiful and the most common site is of people dragging trollies through its streets to reach their summer houses. Travel is a reoccurring theme of city life in Mallorca.
The villages of Mallorca are absolute gem. They are a quick hike away and the bus connection is fantastic to these small villages. This image is from Fornalutx.
These villages were full of empty houses as their usual residents are back home celebrating Christmas. This allowed us to get lost in these villages and talk to a few locals who live in nearby villages.
Some neighbours had intense discussion about the Christmas celebrations.
Mallorca presents great sunset views.
The food in Mallorca is especially delightful. There are a lot of Indian restaurants catering to the needs of the local brits. The level of attention to food is quite high. Some recommendations are : Coca mallorquina, Tumbet mallorquín, Ensaimada, Bunyols, and Coca de patata (especially from Valdemossa).
Hill views in the city of Valdemossa where we went to eat Coca de Patata. This village is called the "Most beautiful place on earth" by Frédéric Chopin. Many locals we talked to said, Valdemossa killed Chopin.
Beautiful mediterranean sea views you can enjoy all during the hike around the coast.
Thanks to Marta for tips, Sundar and Yamini for company. I recommend you all to visit Mallorca. My favourite shoe company, Camper, is from there too. Hike in the Serra de Tramuntana and stay in the beautiful villages on the mountains.
Visiting during the summer can be hectic as the rest of Spain. October - April are my preferred months. See you soon Mallorca.
Cheers!
